From John

Translating an interior novel onto the screen.

My fourth novel, Spark, has been optioned by Charles Roven, who produced Oppenheimer and co-founded Atlas Entertainment. I'm writing the adaptation with Nicholas Kazan, whose screenplay for Reversal of Fortune earned him an Oscar nomination. Andrew Bernstein, who directed key episodes of The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad, is directing.

All of us are deep into the process of figuring out how to translate Spark onto the screen. It's a particular challenge: Jacob's Cotard's Syndrome — his belief that he's already dead — is an interior condition. On the page, you can watch him think. Film must find other ways in.

You can read Spark as a digital or physical book or listen to Scott Brick's narration, which is its own kind of adaptation. And I'm curious — who do you see as Jacob? Miss Holquist? Lorcan?

Drop your email below and tell me what you think. I read every reply.
